In The News: Hardware Goes Green

With energy costs rising and data center servers using more energy, technology makers are giving businesses a choice of more energy-efficient hardware. The amount of energy used by data center servers doubled in the United States and worldwide between 2000 and 2005. A recent study credited a jump in the number of servers, driven by the insatiable demand for Web content. Over the same time period, power costs grew by 132 percent. With electricity now representing up to 70 percent of the cost of operating a data center, businesses need to consider how efficiently their servers are running. In recent months, IBM and Hewlett-Packard among others began marketing premium-priced servers that are more energy efficient but can save the added upfront cost in less than a year.
